The American Warmblood Registry (AWR) was established in 1981 to encourage the breeding of excellent sport horses. AWR is the only American Sporthorse Breed Organization who is a member of the World Breed Federation for Sporthorses. The principal publication of the American Warmblood Registry is WARMBLOOD NEWS.
American breeders, lacking allegiance to a specific European country, have long maintained that all the European Warmbloods are highly intermingled and therefore do not necessarily represent distinct breeds. The AWR registers not only European imports but also their American offspring on an equal basis. In an effort to apply uniform Grading and Inspection Standards, in other words quality control, the AWR combined all European Warmblood Sporthorses into one American registry to broaden the breeds' genetic diversity and to prevent the Warmblood Sporthorse from being ruined by too many splinter groups trying to control small numbers of horses.
The American Warmblood has proven to be a consistent performer in all sports competitions other than racing. The American Warmblood is more reliable and even-tempered than any other horse in the high performance arena. A desirable combination of superb athleticism with an easygoing temperament makes the American Warmblood unbeatable for both the professional competitor and the amateur.
The American Warmblood Registry is committed to the continued improvement of the Warmblood through selective breeding. The AWR accomplishes this by the certification of stallions and mares for breeding purposes. Through registration with the American Warmblood Registry, owners gain access to the Warmbloods listed with the AWR that are available for breeding. AWR-registered horses are also eligible to participate in several competitions that the AWR sponsors each year.
The American Warmblood Registry conducts annual inspections for grading and branding the horses it registers. It also holds seminars for training and licensing breed judges. The first eight judges graduated in September 1997. An additional service we offer is a series of AWR-sponsored breeding clinics that are held periodically. All the activities of the American Warmblood Registry are directed at developing the best sport horses in the world and assisting its members to make this objective a reality.
